The National Kiwi Hatchery is the national leader in kiwi husbandry, egg incubation systems, hatching techniques and kiwi chick rearing. 

Join one of our experiences and take an immersive journey where you'll learn about Kiwi, their native environment and what makes them truly iconic the world over.  Delve into darkness and spot kiwi in our purpose-built nocturnal house and discover the secrets of the kiwi in our interactive displays.

Educational, thought-provoking and truly unique experiences, you'll get to see how we're helping kiwi at the largest and most successful kiwi hatchery in the world. You'll be participating in global conservations efforts with 100% of your ticket price goes straight back to our kiwi hatching programme.

Plan your visit

Kiwi hatching season is September to March. During these months you’ll get to see kiwi eggs being incubated and newly hatched kiwi chicks.

Between April and August there may not be eggs or chicks to see but our resident adult kiwi will be foraging in our Nocturnal House. 

Please ensure you check in at least 10 minutes prior to your scheduled tour time. Transport is provided from Agrodome to National Kiwi Hatchery.

Allow up to 1 hour and 30 minutes for the tour, including transportation.

Location & opening hours

The National Kiwi Hatchery is located in a picturesque valley on the Agrodome Farm, 141 Western Road, Ngongotahā, 10 minutes from downtown Rotorua.

We are open 7 days a week, including public holidays with tours running at set times throughout the day between 9am and 2.30pm.

Fantastic tour at the National Kiwi Hatchery. Staff are all really friendly and knowledgeable, kiwi in the nocturnal house and then chicks as well, very cute. Such a great way to support our national bird.
